What it Means to be Board-Certified

For a physician, board-certification is a mark of distinction. It shows the education they have undertaken beyond the minimal standards and competency requirements in a chosen specialty.

Ultimately, board-certification in a specific area of medicine, such as orthopedics, is a symbol that a doctor has undergone additional training, proven a high level of expertise in that specialty, and are therefore better qualified to practice in that specialty compared to a non-certified doctor.

Board certified ORTHOPEDIC surgeon

Dr. Scott Gherini

Dr. Gherini has over 31 years of experience in the medical field and has been running his private practice since 1989. He moved his practice to Ukiah from Sacramento in 2009 and is currently the only board-certified orthopedic surgeon in Ukiah.

Dr. Gherini earned his bachelor of science degree from Stanford University and received his medical degree from University of Cincinnati. He opened his private practice in 1989 and has been board-certified in Orthopedics since 1991. Prior to that, Dr. Gherini completed residencies for General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He also did a fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery and Joint Implant Surgery at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. While practicing in Sacramento, Dr. Gherini had privileges to treat patients at Mercy General Hospital, Mercy Methodist Hospital, Mercy Folsom Hospital, Sutter General Hospital, and Sutter Memorial Hospital. Dr. Gherini currently has privileges to treat patients at Ukiah Valley Medical Center in addition to those he treats through his private practice.

When deciding what his medical focus would be, Dr. Gherini felt that orthopedics were a natural fit for him and the practice quickly became his true passion. Outside of work, Dr. Gherini spends his time running, hiking, and skiing with his family.
